Plan Micra has been abandoned. Teach me about Mazda2's. Is there anything to look out for or know about? We’re meeting with someone on Saturday about a 2011 with 14000 miles on it.
Woooooo.

HELLO. I’M HERE.
Mazda 2. To date, the single best subcompact Japan has given us. The car has been sold since 2007 across the globe. It’s based on the DE platform, which is based on the Fiesta’s platform. The US and Canada received the 1.5 MZR powered facelifted model from 2011-2014 sending power to the front wheels through a five speed manual or a four speed automatic. The five speed manual is perfection, but the four speed is good enough for most people. The 1.5 MZR has 105 hp and 100 lb ft of torque. The manual one hits 60 in about 8.5 seconds with the automatic about a second slower or so. The Mazda 2 was available in two trim levels: Sport and touring. The sport had steel wheels with covers, a urethane steering wheel, no cruise control, plain cloth seats, optional Bluetooth, and an optional armrest. Moving up to the touring gives you 15 inch alloys, a leather wrapped wheel, cruise control, fog lights, sport cloth with red piping, and a spoiler. The options were also available on the touring. The car also comes with an aux port. It’s a great handling car. It’s stable for what it is and feels very safe. It’s also very comfortable for me as I’m 6’2”. The back will fit someone my size comfortably behind myself. I took one on a road trip in Colombia for eight hours and felt fine afterwards. It’s a little louder than most cars at highway speeds, but that’s to be expected from cars of this size and price. It’s actually quieter than anything else in the category. If I could find the perfect one, I’d love to buy it. It’s super responsive and tossable. As fun as the Fiesta might be, the Mazda 2 is the all around top choice for me. Plus, it’s pretty rock solid in terms of reliability. Also, it’ll return an average of over 30 mpg with both the automatic and manual, but obviously higher with the manual. Just check the Carfax and for any accidents, but other than that, you should be ok. I couldn’t recommend it more. I think you’ll love it.

Thanks! I’ve always liked them. I’m glad we may welcome one into the family

I have two friends that have them, and I’ve never heard a complaint. One of them is into cars, the other isn’t, but they both love it.

BlueMazda2 already covered the highlights. A few other tidbits and details:
•The Mazda2 is so good that Ford kept its stake in Mazda what it was for just long enough to base the (marginally-larger) Fiesta on it (but there’s few if any common parts to my knowledge, maybe chassis and suspension parts?). Then, of course, Ford put the potentially-problematic PowerShift DCT 6-speed auto in the Fiesta (though in such a small car, why not get the manual?). Happily, the manual transmissions in both are a hoot, though I believe the Fiesta gets a 6-speed stick versus the 5-speed in the 2.
•Sprite Green is the best Mazda2 color, followed by the metallic blue, then the red I suppose.
•Touring models are within a few hundred dollars at most of a Sport, which I personally would find worthwhile, but if your wife will be driving in pothole-infested areas, the steel wheels on the Sport might be preferable.
•It’a the Miata of the subcompact segment, so you know it’s good.
•I believe you can get CPO ones still, and CarMax has a good selection of them.
•If you want a 2 but a bit newer and with more creature comforts and amenities, the CX-3 is essentially a slightly-taller Mazda2 hatch, and used ones are plentiful. For those the best colors are Soul Red and the brighter blue.

I owned a 2011 Sport (4AT) for literally two weeks, sold it because it was so uncomfortable and slow. That said, it is adorable.

My ex had one and I got to drive it a bit. It is a fun nimble little car with good handling. The hatch is practical and the only way to go on something so small.
The engine is adequate, but you never forget it is only a 1.5 L. The short gearing helps compensate for that around town, but makes extended highway cruising buzzy and lowers fuel economy at higher speeds.

Cost. I could pay cash for the manual, but automatics are much more

But it has more standard safety features than the Civic! Or you could get a Yaris, it has the same drivetrain as the Echo.
